Digital or Mechanical Row Counter: Which Is Actually Better?

Row counters split into two families that are genuinely good at different things, and the internet's habit of declaring one obsolete is unhelpful.

Here is what each type actually does well, based on the mechanics rather than the marketing.

The mechanical family

Their shared advantage is that they are not computers. There is no battery to die, no screen to wake, no notification to interrupt you, and no possibility of an app update changing anything. What mechanical counters cannot do

They cannot tell you which project a count belongs to. Two clickers in a bag are two numbers with no labels, and after a week you will not know which is the cardigan. What apps are actually for

Multiple counters per project — rows plus repeats plus increases — is the second reason, and undo is the third. A double tap in an app costs one tap to fix; a double click on a clicker costs your confidence in the number.

Apps also do things mechanical counters cannot: a target with visible progress, a record of how long you actually worked, notes that live with the project, and in some apps the pattern PDF itself.

Where apps genuinely lose

Be honest about the failure modes, because they are real.

A phone needs charge, and a phone that dies mid-project takes your count with it until it is charged. A phone is also an interruption machine: opening a counter app puts you one notification away from twenty minutes of not crocheting. Some people find that reason enough to keep the phone in another room entirely — which is a completely valid choice, and a mechanical counter is what serves it.

There is also a lock-in risk. Counts in an app depend on that app continuing to exist and continuing to work through iOS updates. A clicker will still work in ten years.

The combination most people end up with

Use a mechanical counter for the row you are on right now, especially if you like the tactile click and want your phone away. Use an app as the project's home: which projects exist, how far each one has come, which yarn and hook, what you changed, and where each repeat count stands.

That division plays to both strengths. The clicker is unbreakable and immediate; the app remembers things you will otherwise forget. Neither is trying to be the other.
