The basics
What is RowTally?
RowTally is a row counter and project tracker for crochet and knitting on iPhone and iPad. You create a project, tap once per row or round, and the app keeps the count along with the yarn, hook or needle size, pattern name and your notes. It also holds additional stitch counters for pattern repeats and increases, a session timer and a progress ring toward a row target.
Which devices does RowTally run on?
iPhone and iPad, and Mac with an M1 chip or later. The current App Store release requires iOS 26.0, iPadOS 26.0 or macOS 26.0 — a strict requirement compared with other counter apps, so check your device can run it. There is no Apple Watch app and no Android version. Support for older iOS versions is in development but not released yet.
Does RowTally work for knitting as well as crochet?
Yes. Rows and rounds are counted identically, and the project fields cover both needle and hook sizes. The App Store listing leads with crochet because that is where most of our users come from, but nothing in the app is crochet-only.
Do I need an account to use RowTally?
No. There is no sign-up, no login and no email required. You download the app and start counting.
Does RowTally work offline?
Yes, completely. Every feature works with no connection at all, because your projects are stored on the device rather than on a server. Airplane mode changes nothing.
Counting
How do I count a row?
Tap the large counter area in the middle of the counter screen. Each tap increments the count by one and is confirmed with haptic feedback, so you do not need to look at the screen to know it registered.
What happens if I tap twice by accident?
Tap Undo in the toolbar to go back one row. Undo is there specifically for double taps, which are the most common way a count goes wrong.
Is my count saved if the app closes?
Yes. Every tap is written to storage on the device immediately, so the count survives a force-quit, a flat battery or an iOS restart. You can verify this yourself: count ten rows, swipe the app away in the app switcher, and reopen it.
Can I track pattern repeats separately from rows?
Yes. Each project can have additional stitch counters alongside the main row counter — for pattern repeats, increases, decreases or colour changes. They increment independently of the row count. The free tier includes one additional counter per project; Premium removes the limit.
Can I set a target row count?
Yes. Enter a target when you create or edit a project, and the counter screen shows a progress ring that fills as you approach it.
What does the session timer do?
It records how long each counting session lasted, so you can see how much time a project actually took. It starts when you begin counting and does not require any action from you.
Your data and privacy
Where are my projects stored?
On your device. Projects, row counts and notes are stored locally using Core Data and are not uploaded to any server we operate. They are included in your normal iPhone or iCloud device backup.
Does RowTally sync between my iPhone and iPad?
No. Because everything is stored on the device, projects do not sync between devices — each device holds its own copy. If cross-device sync is essential for you, an app built around iCloud sync will serve you better, and we say so on our comparison pages.
Does RowTally collect any data about me?
The app sends anonymous product analytics to PostHog, hosted in the EU: app opens, which screens you view, and events such as a project being created, a row being incremented (including the row number reached), how long a counting session lasted, and a purchase completing. PostHog's session replay is also enabled, which captures periodic screenshots of the app with text input fields and images masked, so what you type is not transmitted. There is no account, so none of this is tied to your identity, and we don't collect your location or sell data to anyone. Our Privacy Policy sets out the detail, including the limits of masking.
What happens to my projects if I delete the app?
They are deleted with it, because they live only on the device. Restore from a device backup to get them back, or note down your row counts before deleting.
Free tier and Premium
Is RowTally free?
Yes, with limits on quantity rather than capability. The free tier covers one project, with the main row counter plus one additional stitch counter. Every counting feature — haptics, undo, the progress ring, the session timer and all project details — is included, and there are no ads anywhere in the app.
What does Premium add?
Premium removes both free-tier limits: unlimited projects and unlimited stitch counters per project. It costs $3.99 per month or $24.99 per year through your Apple ID. Prices in your local currency are shown in the App Store before you confirm.
Are there ads in RowTally?
No, at any tier.
How do I restore my subscription on a new device?
Open Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases. Your subscription is tied to your Apple ID, so it transfers to any device signed in with the same account.
How do I cancel Premium?
Through the App Store, not through us — open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel RowTally there. Apple handles all billing.
Choosing an app
Is RowTally the best row counter app?
It depends on what you need, and we would rather be useful than flattering. RowTally is a good fit if you want a minimal, ad-free counter that works fully offline with your data on your device. If you work from PDF patterns, want an Apple Watch app or need iCloud sync, other apps do those things and RowTally does not — our comparison pages set out which app wins on which point.
How does RowTally compare to My Row Counter?
My Row Counter has considerably more features — pattern PDF import, chart creation, Ravelry integration, voice control and an Apple Watch app — plus 4.8 stars from more than 3,700 App Store ratings. RowTally is smaller, ad-free, fully offline and needs no account, but requires iOS 26 while My Row Counter runs on iOS 15.6. Pick on whether you want capability or minimalism — and check your iPhone can run ours at all.
RowTally has no App Store reviews. Should that worry me?
It is a fair thing to weigh. RowTally is new, so there is no track record of user ratings yet — unlike Count That Now with 5,200+ ratings or My Row Counter with 3,700+. What we can tell you is verifiable: the app is free to try, needs no account, and stores nothing off your device, so trying it costs you nothing but a download.
