How to Count Rounds in Amigurumi Without Losing the Spiral
Most crochet gives you something to count. A row has a visible top edge; a joined round has a seam running up the side. Amigurumi has neither, because it is worked as one continuous spiral with no join at all.
That is the whole problem. It is also entirely solvable, but not by counting more carefully — only by leaving a record as you go.
Mark the first stitch of every round
Put a locking stitch marker in the first stitch of the round and move it up each time you come back to it. While that marker is in place your position is unambiguous: you are working the round the marker sits in.
Move it as the first action of each new round, not the last action of the old one. If you are interrupted mid-round — which is when counts die — the marker still tells you exactly where the round began.
Count increases, not stitches
A standard amigurumi sphere starts with 6 stitches in a magic ring and adds 6 per increase round: 6, 12, 18, 24, and so on. That gives you a much better checkpoint than counting individual stitches.
At the end of any increase round, count the total. If it is a multiple of 6 that matches the sequence, you are on the round you think you are. If it is 23 rather than 24, you missed an increase — and finding that now costs one round instead of ten.
- Round 1: 6 sts (magic ring)
- Round 2: 12 sts (increase in every stitch)
- Round 3: 18 sts (1 sc, inc, repeated)
- Round 4: 24 sts (2 sc, inc, repeated)
- Then plain rounds hold the count steady until you decrease
Reading the spokes when you have lost your place
There is one genuine recovery method, and it is easier than it sounds. Increases in a flat circle or sphere line up into visible lines radiating out from the centre — crocheters call them spokes or seams.
Count the stitches along one spoke from the centre outward and you have the number of increase rounds worked. Add the plain rounds you can count above the last increase and you have your round number, without unpicking anything. It works because increases stack, and stacking is visible even when rounds are not.
Keep the decrease count separately
Closing a sphere mirrors the opening: decrease rounds take you back down 24, 18, 12, 6. This is where a second counter earns its place, because a missed decrease shows up as a lumpy, gappy closure that stuffing pushes through.
One counter for the round number, one for decrease rounds completed. Do not derive one from the other in your head — the plain rounds in the middle make that arithmetic unreliable.
Stuff before you close, and note where you stopped
Once the opening is smaller than your hand you cannot fix the stuffing, so add it while there is still room, firmly enough that the fabric does not show through.
And write down the round before you put the piece down. An amigurumi head at round 19 of 26 looks almost identical to one at round 22, and the marker only tells you where the round starts — not which round it is.
